Venous Reflux Disease

Understanding Venous Reflux Disease

Healthy Leg veins contain valves that open and close to assist If you are the return of blood back to the heart. When these valves become damaged or diseased, it can cause blood to pool in the legs and lead to symptoms such as pain, swelling, swollen limbs, leg heaviness and fatigue, skin changes and skin ulcers, and varicose veins.

BEFORE: Traditionally patients diagnosed with venous reflux undergo vein stripping surgery. Vein stripping begins with an incision in the groin region. A second incision is made either below the knee or at the ankle and do the same thing on that end. When both ends of the vein are loose, a thin, wire instrument (the stripping tool) is “threaded” through the vein from the groin to the second incision. The stripping tool is tied to the vein and pulled (or “stripped”) the vein from the leg. Vein stripping requires general or spinal anesthesia and several incisions. Following the procedure, there is usually some discomfort and a necessary recovery period.
